How to budget a tight 250-word answer
The 250-word supplement is one of the most common single-question asks. Unlike the 650-word personal essay, where you can afford a slow build, the 250-word supplement must land your thesis immediately.
The 250-word formula
Opening (one sentence, 20–30 words): State your main point immediately. "I want to major in biology because..." or "Your engineering program appeals to me most because..." Do not throat-clear. Admissions officers read hundreds of these; the first sentence determines if they keep reading with interest or just skim.
Example (120–150 words): Show, don't tell. One concrete example (a project, experience, observation, or question) that proves you mean what you said. Use specific details: names, numbers, moments. This is not filler; it is proof that you know what you want and why.
Tie-back (40–60 words): Connect your example to the question asked. "This project showed me..." or "Working on X taught me that your college is where I can..." Admissions officers want to see that you have thought about what comes next.
This formula leaves room for 5–10 words of polish and one or two small structural sentences if needed. Every word earns its place.
