How to Calculate Your Grade in a Class by Hand
Master the arithmetic behind your final grade. This guide walks you through both weighted-category and total-points systems, so you can verify any calculator and understand exactly where your grade stands.

First, find out which system your course uses
Before you calculate, you need to know which grading system your instructor uses. Open your syllabus and look for a section titled "Grading" or "Grade Breakdown." Here are the tell-tale signs of each:
Weighted categories
The syllabus lists categories with percentages that add to 100%:
"Participation (20%), Quizzes (30%), Midterm Exam (20%), Final Exam (30%)"

Total points
The syllabus lists assignments or exams with point totals:

This tells you to sum all points earned, divide by the total points possible.
Standards-based or hybrid
Some instructors use standards-based grading (where grades reflect mastery, not averages) or hybrid approaches (unequal weight by assignment type, or thresholds). These need special handling and are beyond the scope here—ask your instructor for clarification.
Weighted categories, step by step
This is the most common grading system in college courses. You calculate the average within each category, then blend them according to the weights.
Worked example: Four categories
Let's say your syllabus has four components, and here are your grades so far:

Sum the contributions: 17.0 + 23.4 + 16.4 + 27.0 = 83.8%
Your course grade is 83.8%, which is a B (assuming the standard 80–89 scale).
Total points, step by step
In a total-points system, you simply add up all the points you've earned and divide by all the points that have been assigned. Let's use the same student, but reframe it as points:

The syllabus says: "Participation (100 points), Quizzes (200 points), Midterm (100 points), Final (100 points)." This student scored:

Your course grade is 82.6%, which is still a B—but notice it is lower than the weighted-category answer (83.8%).
Why the two methods gave different answers
The student's quiz average (78%) is the weakest component. In the weighted-category system, quizzes count as 30% of the grade. But in the total-points system, the 200 quiz points (out of 500 total) represent 40% of the course. Because quizzes make up a larger fraction of the total points, they drag the grade down more. This is the key difference between the two systems.
Mid-semester: what to do about ungraded work
Early in the term, not all assignments are graded yet. When you calculate your current grade, you must choose what to do with the ungraded work. Your syllabus may state which approach the instructor uses—if it doesn't, ask.
Option 1: Average over graded work only
Include only the assignments you've already completed and received a score for. For example, if you have 3 quiz scores (75, 82, 79) and 4 more quizzes assigned but not yet graded, your quiz average is (75+82+79)÷3 = 78.7%. This approach gives you an honest picture of your performance so far, but it ignores the fact that you still have a chance to improve in the categories where you have few grades.
Option 2: Assume a score for ungraded work
Suppose you want to predict your final grade if you keep scoring at your current level. For ungraded assignments, assume you will score the same as your current average in that category. For example, if your quiz average is 78%, assume you'll score 78% on the remaining quizzes. This gives you a "best guess" of your final grade under the assumption that your performance stays constant.
Neither option is "correct"—the right choice depends on your question. Use Option 1 to see where you stand today. Use Option 2 to forecast your final grade if you don't change your study habits.
Dropped lowest scores
Some syllabi say the instructor will drop your lowest score (or lowest two) in a category before averaging. Always drop first, then average.
Worked example: Five quizzes with lowest dropped
You have five quiz scores: 85, 92, 78, 88, 81. The syllabus says "lowest quiz score is dropped." Here's how:
- List your scores: 85, 92, 78, 88, 81
- Identify the lowest: 78
- Remove it: 85, 92, 88, 81 (four scores remain)
- Average the remaining: (85 + 92 + 88 + 81) ÷ 4 = 346 ÷ 4 = 86.5%
Your quiz average is 86.5%, not 86.8% (which you would get if you averaged all five). The drop raised your average by 0.3 percentage points.
Extra credit
Extra credit points are added to a category's points earned, which can push a category above 100% or a final grade above 100%. This is intentional—extra credit is a buffer or reward.
Example: Your participation category allows 100 points. You earn 95 points in regular participation, plus 10 bonus points from attending optional review sessions. Your participation score is 105 points out of 100, or 105%. If participation is 20% of the course grade and your other categories average 80%, your course grade becomes (0.20 × 105) + (0.80 × 80) = 21 + 64 = 85%.
Curves
A "curve" is any adjustment the instructor makes to scores after the fact. There are several types, and your instructor may or may not tell you which one they use:
Flat-point curve
Add the same number of points to everyone's score. For example, if the class median on a midterm was 68%, and the instructor decides the exam was too hard, they might add 5 points to all scores. A student who scored 72% becomes 77%.
Scaled (proportional) curve
Stretch or shrink the range of scores. For example, if the highest score was 95%, the instructor might rescale so that 95% becomes 100%, and all other scores shift proportionally. A student who scored 85% might become 89% or 90%, depending on the exact formula.
Ranked curve
Assign letter grades (or final scores) based on percentile rank rather than absolute percentage. For example, the top 10% of the class gets an A, the next 20% gets a B, and so on, regardless of the actual percentage scores.
Only your instructor knows which curve, if any, they will apply. Curves are rare in individual final grade calculations and are usually applied to a single exam or assignment, not the entire course.
Rounding and the cut-off
A common frustration: you end up with 89.4% and wonder if it rounds to 90% (an A). The answer depends on your syllabus's rounding policy, which is a matter of instructor preference, not mathematics.
Check your syllabus for a sentence like: "Final grades are rounded to the nearest whole percent" or "89.5% and above is an A."
If your syllabus says nothing, ask your instructor. Do not assume standard mathematical rounding. Some instructors round 89.4% down to 89%; others round up. Some use "round half up" (89.5 → 90), others use "round half to even" or no rounding at all.
The only trustworthy source is the syllabus or a direct message to your instructor. Do not rely on a calculator's default rounding behavior.

Can I calculate my grade before all assignments are graded?
Yes. Use "Option 1" (average graded work only) to see your current standing, or "Option 2" (assume current average for the rest) to forecast your final grade. Both are valid; the question is what you want to know.
Why does my calculated grade differ from what the gradebook shows?
Common causes: you counted a future assignment as if it were graded (Option 1 vs Option 2 mismatch); you missed that the syllabus has a rounding policy; the instructor hasn't yet updated the gradebook after posting a recent grade; or the gradebook is set to show "current grade" (graded work only) rather than a projected final grade.

Can extra credit push me above 100%?
Yes. Extra credit is added to a component's points or percentage, which can result in that component exceeding 100%.
