What does “6,500 institutions” actually count?

Duolingo's current directory advertises 6,500+ accepting institutions worldwide as of September 2026. The directory is searchable by school and shows program-level detail down to individual graduate departments, which is how you can confirm, for instance, that MIT lists DET for both undergraduate and graduate admissions while a specific department elsewhere might not.

What the number does not count is uniform acceptance. Some listings on Duolingo's own directory carry an asterisk meaning the applicant may still need to submit additional proof of English proficiency. The count also has nothing to do with visas or immigration: an institution accepting DET for admission and a government accepting it for a visa are two entirely separate approvals, decided by two different organizations with two different lists. How do I check whether my specific university accepts it?

Do not rely on a blog post, a forum thread, or even the summary above. Check the primary source directly, in this order:

  1. Open Duolingo's own accepting institutions directory and search your school by name. Note whether your specific program appears, and whether it carries the asterisk for additional proof.
  2. Click through to that program's own English-requirements page. Duolingo's directory links directly to it, and departmental pages sometimes set a higher bar or a different minimum score than the university's general admissions page.
  3. Search that page for the exact phrase “Duolingo English Test” and read the sentence around it. “Accepted” and “accepted for some applicants, at the department's discretion” are different guarantees.
  4. If a visa or immigration step is also involved, repeat the check on the relevant government page, gov.uk for the UK, Home Affairs for Australia, or IRCC for Canada, rather than assuming the university's admissions decision extends to your visa. It does not automatically do so.

Should you take the Duolingo English Test?

Take it if

  • You have personally checked your specific program's own page (not a third-party list) and confirmed it names the Duolingo English Test as accepted.
  • Your course is degree level or above at a UK university whose Higher Education Provider assesses English itself and accepts DET for that assessment, so DET may satisfy the English-assessment step without being a SELT.
  • Speed and cost matter more than portability. As of September 2026, results are stated as arriving within two days and the listed single-test fee is $70; that may suit you if your one destination is confirmed to take it.
  • You can arrange the test conditions: a private room with nobody else present, a stable connection, a computer with a front-facing camera, and a second device (a phone) to film the setup, all at the same time.
  • You are applying to a U.S. program under an F-1 visa and its admissions page confirms DET. Admission is only one step: the State Department says an SEVP-approved school issues Form I-20 after accepting your enrollment, then you apply for the visa and meet a consular officer's requirements. Do not take it if

  • Your pathway runs through a national visa or immigration language-test list. As of September 2026, each of the UK's SELT list, Australia's Home Affairs list, and Canada's IRCC Express Entry list excludes DET; the score itself does not change those list requirements.
  • You have only seen your target on a third-party “universities that accept Duolingo” roundup, not on the program's own current page. Those lists go stale and sometimes list a university's general policy while a specific department disagrees.
  • You need it for more than one purpose (admission and a visa, say) without checking each one separately. Acceptance for one use does not automatically transfer to the other.

What do I do if I already took it and my target does not accept it?

  1. Confirm which step actually refused it. A school's admissions office and a country's visa or immigration authority are different gatekeepers. Your DET score might still be perfectly valid for the admission decision even if the same application later needs a different test for the visa, or the reverse.
  2. If a program genuinely requires IELTS, TOEFL, or a specific SELT, book that test rather than a second DET attempt. Does the Duolingo English Test work for a UK Student visa?

As of September 2026, it depends on what you are studying. Duolingo is not one of the five unique providers listed across the Home Office's Secure English Language Test (SELT) lists, so DET cannot substitute for a SELT itself.
