IELTS Score for Grad School: What Departments Actually Want

Why is there more than one IELTS requirement for masters and PhD study?

The published IELTS score for PhD admission and the one for a taught master's are usually the same institution-wide number, which is exactly the problem: one figure is doing the work of three decisions. A graduate application passes through three bodies that do not share a number. The graduate school sets the institution-wide floor and enforces it mechanically. The academic department sets the bar it actually admits on, which is often higher and often unpublished. The funding committee, in the United States especially, sets a separate Speaking band before it will let you stand in front of undergraduates.

Cornell's Graduate School states the pattern plainly: its own IELTS Academic minimum for research degree applicants is an overall band of 7.0, and then it adds that "some graduate fields and programs have additional language requirements. They may require higher IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT scores or may request an interview before offering admission" (checked 8 September 2026). The University of Sheffield says the same thing in fewer words: postgraduate applicants need IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component, and "some academic departments may require a higher score".

The consequence is practical. A band of 6.5 sent to a department that admits at 7.0 is not rejected by a rule, it is rejected by a committee, and no rejection letter will tell you which of the three gates you missed. • Admissions office

  Reads first, mechanically. Checks the overall band against the published institutional minimum, checks any per-skill floor, checks the test date against the validity window, and checks the test version (Academic, not General; in-person versus online; One Skill Retake accepted or not). A file that fails here may be filtered before an academic sees it.

• Department

  Reads second, comparatively. It is not applying a rule, it is ranking a pool. If the strongest applicants all sit at 7.5, the published 6.5 tells you little about the bar. This is the gate where a Writing band that trails the rest of the profile can draw attention, because departments may assess readiness for thesis writing.

• Funding committee

  Reads third, and only for funded applicants. A teaching assistantship is a teaching appointment, so the university needs evidence of spoken English. Illinois and Cornell both put that threshold at IELTS Speaking 8.0. Admission and funding can therefore come apart: you can be admitted and still be told you may not hold a TA line this year.

Which IELTS score for grad school clears each gate, university by university?

Set your four bands. The matrix shows what eight programme rows across seven universities publish, sorted however you like, with the cells you fail tinted so the failure pattern is visible down a column. The numbers shown are quoted from the institution's own English requirements page, checked on 8 September 2026, and linked in Sources.

Row notes: what the number hides

Why is the sub-score floor the usual failure point for graduate applicants?

Graduate applicants tend to have a lopsided profile. Years of reading papers and listening to lectures in English push Listening and Reading to 7.5 or 8.0, while Writing sits a band or more behind, because academic Writing is scored on task response and coherence rather than on vocabulary you already have. The overall band hides that, and the sub-score floor exposes it.

The arithmetic is the reason. IELTS calculates the overall band as the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band, with an average ending in .25 rounded up to the next half band and .75 rounded up to the next whole band. Two profiles that look identical at the overall level can differ by a band and a half in Writing.

Worked example 1: strong overall, one weak skill

Listening 8.0, Reading 8.0, Writing 5.5, Speaking 6.5. The sum is 28.0 and the average is exactly 7.0, so the overall band is 7.0. Against the University of British Columbia's graduate minimum, which is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking, this profile clears the overall band by 0.5 and fails on Writing by 0.5. UBC publishes no higher tier and no assistantship Speaking band, so those two gates are excluded rather than passed. One number decides the outcome, and it is not the one on the front of the report.

Worked example 2: admission threshold met, funding threshold missed

Listening 8.0, Reading 8.0, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.5. The sum is 28.5 and the average is 7.125, which rounds down to an overall band of 7.0. At Illinois that meets the 6.5 limited-status minimum by 0.5 but sits 0.5 below the 7.5 full-status band, and the Speaking band of 6.5 is 1.5 below the 8.0 the Graduate College lists for teaching assistants. Meeting an admission minimum does not guarantee admission, and the admission and funding gates can fail for different reasons.

Why do US departments attach an IELTS speaking requirement to a teaching assistantship?

A teaching assistantship is a teaching appointment, not an admission score. Because it involves spoken interaction with students, some US universities set a separate spoken-English condition for the appointment.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is explicit that "all English proficiency requirements and exemptions listed above are for admission purposes only. Admissions minimums are not equivalent to minimums required for holding a teaching assistantship; and not all exemptions apply for those holding a teaching assistantship." Its published TA threshold is IELTS Academic Speaking 8, with an Oral English Assessment Interview offered to students who have not met it. Cornell runs the same logic through score tiers: research degree applicants in Score Tier A hold an overall band of 7.0 or higher with a Speaking section of 8.0 or higher and are automatically approved to serve as a TA, while Tier B applicants meet the same overall 7.0 and must arrange an English Language Assessment with Cornell's International TA Program.

What happens to the money if you clear admission but not Speaking

In most US departments the funding package for a PhD student is assembled from teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships. If the Speaking band blocks the TA line, the department may use another funding source, offer admission without funding, or defer the funded place, depending on its budget and policy. Both Illinois and Cornell publish an assessment route, so ask how a missed Speaking threshold would affect your appointment and timeline before you accept.

A research degree with no teaching duty may carry no Speaking threshold at all. In the matrix above, each listed row outside the United States publishes no assistantship Speaking band, so that gate is marked as not published and left out of the verdict. That is not the same as passing it, and it is not a promise that your department has no spoken English check of its own.

How do the CAS and the visa condition change the IELTS requirement for masters study in the UK and Ireland?

In the UK there are two English standards running in parallel, and students routinely confuse them. The University of Manchester states the immigration one: UK Visas and Immigration "requires that every student requiring a visa to study in the UK must show evidence of a minimum level of English language (Common European Framework (CEFR) B2 level) in order to be granted a Student Route visa". Then it states the academic one: "our academic Schools may require applicants to demonstrate English proficiency above B2 level, as the academic content of a UK degree can be linguistically demanding. Academic English entry requirements vary by course."

The two conditions have different consequences when you miss them. Miss the university's academic condition and your offer stays conditional. Miss the Student Route English condition and sponsorship may be blocked unless an exemption or another accepted form of evidence applies. The link between them is the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Manchester issues a CAS only after you have accepted an unconditional offer and completed its Right to Study check, and a CAS is required before you can apply for a Student visa. A conditional offer is a real offer, but the calendar does not treat it as one. If you have not read the mechanics, start with what a conditional offer for grad school actually commits you to.

One more UK trap sits in the test version. A course below degree level, which includes a separate non-integrated pre-sessional English course, needs a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test taken at an approved centre, so the ordinary IELTS Academic you already hold may not be the right document for the pre-sessional you are being sent to. Manchester also accepts IELTS One Skill Retake for the two IELTS versions it recognises, while the University of Edinburgh states that it does "not accept IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS General, IELTS for UKVI General or IELTS Life Skills for UKVI" and that requirements "must be met in a single test". Two Russell Group universities, opposite answers, same test.

Ireland publishes the same architecture more legibly. Trinity College Dublin bands its entry: Band B, the standard requirement for most undergraduate and postgraduate courses, is IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band; Band C, the higher requirement, is 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each band; and applicants who miss the band can apply for Trinity's pre-sessional summer programme instead of waiting a year. Results must have been issued within two years prior to the start of the course.

How are graduate English conditions published in Australia, New Zealand and Canada?

The ANU and UBC examples here publish per-skill floors, making them easier to plan against than the overall-band-only examples in this matrix. The Australian National University's admissions policy says unspecified postgraduate coursework programmes require IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, while higher degrees by research require the same except for the PhD in Clinical Psychology. The University of British Columbia's Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requires 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each of the four components, taken within the last 24 months at the time the application is submitted, and notes that individual graduate programs may require higher scores.

The registration bar that sits above the admission bar

For clinical and regulated fields, additional English standards can apply. ANU's policy separates its admission thresholds from possible professional-registration requirements: it states that "students applying for accreditation or registration with professional bodies may have additional requirements. Students are responsible for confirming they meet the registration or accreditation standards", and it sets the MChD at 7.0 overall with 6.0 in each skill, the Master of Clinical Psychology at 7.0 overall with 6.0 in each skill, the Master of Professional Psychology at 7.0 overall with 7.0 in every skill, and the PhD in Clinical Psychology at 7.0 overall with 7.0 in every skill. ANU allows the 7.0-in-each requirement for the Master of Professional Psychology and the PhD in Clinical Psychology to be met across two sittings within a six-month window, provided both overall scores are 7.0 and no individual score is below 6.5, a concession that is easy to miss in the policy. If your target field is nursing, medicine, psychology, teaching, pharmacy, law or engineering with a licensure path, look up the regulator's English standard before you book a test date, because university admission does not by itself make you eligible for registration.

New Zealand universities publish graduate English requirements in the same style as Australia, band plus per-skill floor, but they are set individually by each university and by each faculty. We do not print New Zealand numbers here because we could not verify them from the universities' own pages while writing this page. Read the requirement from the university's admissions page rather than from an aggregator.

Why is the programme page authoritative for German and English-taught European masters?

For English-taught graduate programmes in Germany, there is no single national IELTS score to apply across the country; each university and degree programme can set its own requirement. The Technical University of Munich accepts IELTS Academic with a minimum overall band score of 6.5 and publishes no per-skill floor, and it accepts IELTS One Skill Retake only if you upload a new and complete Test Report Form rather than the retake certificate alone. It then points applicants at the academic and examination regulations of the individual degree programme, the FPSO, for cases where an alternative form of proof applies.

A useful pattern for English-taught European programmes is that the university page tells you what tests are recognised and the programme page tells you what score you need. The DAAD International Programmes database is a reasonable place to find English-taught programmes and their admission pages, but it is a directory, not a rulebook, and the number in a directory entry may be only as fresh as the university's last update to it. When the two disagree, check the programme page and keep a copy of the requirement you relied on.

What if your band is short of the IELTS 7.0 grad school requirement?

Being 0.5 short is a scheduling problem more often than it is a fatal one, provided you act in the right order. Work down this list and stop at the first option that fits your intake date.

1. Check whether you needed the test at all. A prior degree taught and assessed in English exempts you at many institutions, and the documentation rules are specific. Read when graduate programmes waive the TOEFL or IELTS before you pay for another sitting.
2. Ask for a conditional offer with an English language condition. Sheffield states that most academic departments can make conditional offers to applicants who do not meet the English requirement at the point of application, with the condition to be met before the programme starts. A conditional offer can let you remain under consideration while you retest, but read its terms carefully.
3. Repair one skill rather than four, if the institution accepts it. One Skill Retake must be sat within 60 days of the original computer-delivered test and can be taken once per original test. Acceptance is decided institution by institution: Illinois and Edinburgh refuse it, TUM and Manchester accept it, and ANU accepts it for unspecified programmes but not for its specified MChD or psychology programmes.
4. Take a pre-sessional or pathway English programme. Some universities that run their own pre-sessional course may accept its completion in place of a test score, on a stated timetable. Check the visa version question first: a separate, non-integrated pre-sessional in the UK is study below degree level and needs a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test.
5. Deferral, last. Moving to the next intake may delay funding or other plans. Before you accept it, put the retake date on your grad school application timeline so the score is valid on the date the new programme starts, not merely on the date you apply.

How do you read a graduate programme's English requirement page correctly?

Four phrases change the meaning of the number printed next to them. Learning to spot them takes ten minutes and saves a cycle.

1. "with a minimum of 6.0 in each component"

This is a floor, not an average, and it is enforced independently of the overall band. An overall 7.5 with a Writing 5.5 fails a 6.0 floor. If the phrase is absent, the institution may genuinely have no per-skill floor, which is common in the United States and at TUM, and your weak skill is then judged by the department instead of by a rule.

2. "some departments may require a higher score"

Read this as "the published number is the floor and the real bar is not on this page". It is an instruction to go and read the department's own admissions page, and if that page is silent, to ask. Cornell, Sheffield and UBC all carry a version of this sentence.

3. "for admission purposes only"

The number does not cover assistantship eligibility, professional registration or, in the UK, the immigration standard. Illinois prints this phrase directly above its separate teaching assistant table. Wherever you see it, there is a second number somewhere on the site.

4. "valid" plus a date anchor

The two-year window is common, but universities anchor it to different dates, and the anchor is what determines whether your existing score survives the cycle. IELTS itself recommends that results are treated as valid for two years after the test, and says organisations may choose to accept them for longer.

What should you email the graduate coordinator, and what should you not ask?

The graduate coordinator is an administrator who handles programme questions. Ask them things they are best placed to answer: which number binds, whether a condition can be attached, whether a retake in a given month arrives in time. Do not ask them to predict your chances, to evaluate your profile, or to confirm a number that is printed on their own page; use the email to resolve an ambiguity that affects your application.

Rewrite it in your own voice before sending; an obviously templated email reads as one. And keep the effort proportionate: a coordinator's reply settles a fact, while the documents that decide the outcome are the ones you write yourself, starting with the difference between a personal statement and a statement of purpose.
