How to write flashcards that actually work
Good flashcards follow a few simple principles. They are much more effective than copying whole paragraphs.
One idea per card
Each card should test one small piece of knowledge. Instead of "Explain photosynthesis," ask "What is the primary function of chlorophyll?" Break complex topics into many simple questions.
Ask questions, don't state facts
Use the question form on the front. "How do plants store energy?" is better than "Plant energy storage." Questions force you to actively recall, not just recognize.
Minimum information principle
Keep answers as short as possible. If your definition is more than two sentences, break it into smaller cards. Shorter cards are easier to recall and less prone to forgetting half the answer.
Use your own words
Rewrite definitions in your own language, not copied from textbooks. This forces understanding and makes the material stick. If you can't rewrite it, you don't understand it yet.
Add context or a cue
Include enough context on the front to be meaningful. "Photosynthesis: the process by which plants…" is vague. Better: "In photosynthesis, what molecule captures light energy?" — the answer is specific and testable.
How to study a deck
Spaced repetition is a proven technique to lock knowledge into long-term memory. Use this flashcard app to study effectively.
Test before you check
Always try to recall the answer before flipping the card. Even if you get it wrong, the effort strengthens your memory. Rate yourself honestly: if you hesitated or guessed, pick "Hard" or "Again."
Rate honestly
Again: You forgot or got it wrong. Hard: You recalled it but had to think hard. Good: You recalled it smoothly. Easy: Instant recall, no effort.
Study in short daily sessions
Cramming works briefly but fades fast. Study 15–20 minutes most days instead. Cards you rate "Again" reappear later in the same session so you can strengthen weak areas.

Questions
How do I back up my decks?
Export your deck as CSV using the "Export as CSV" button. Save the file on your computer. You can import it anytime to restore or move the deck to another browser.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. This app works on any device with a web browser, including phones and tablets. Tap the card to flip it, and use the rating buttons to study. For a dedicated mobile app, try AnkiDroid (free) or the official Quizlet app.
What if I close the browser? Will my decks be saved?
Yes. Your decks are saved to local storage as soon as you add or edit a card. Close and reopen the browser anytime—your decks will still be there. But if you clear your browser cache or data, your decks are permanently deleted, so export backups.
How does the "Again" rating work?
When you rate a card "Again," it's added back to the study queue about 3 cards ahead so you can practice it again in the same session. Cards rated "Good" or "Easy" are marked as done for this session. Study "Hard" cards more often.
Can I import decks from Quizlet or Anki?
Yes. Export the deck from Quizlet or Anki as CSV, then paste or upload the file here. This app accepts both comma- and tab-separated formats, compatible with both platforms.
What's the difference between "Hard" and "Again"?
"Hard" means you recalled it, but it took effort or you were uncertain. "Again" means you forgot or got it wrong. Use "Again" if you have no idea or guessed; use "Hard" if you remembered but hesitated. Honest ratings help you focus on weak spots.
