What a Literature Review Matrix Is and Why Supervisors Ask for One

A literature review matrix is a structured table where each row represents one source (paper, book, report) and each column represents an element you want to track across all sources. Rather than writing summaries in prose, you distil each source into cells, making patterns visible at a glance.

Supervisors value matrices because they force you to:

  • Read actively. You cannot skim—you extract specific information on purpose.
  • Organize knowledge. You see which methods are common, which findings agree, which populations remain unstudied.
  • Prepare synthesis writing. You move from summary mode ("Author A found X") to synthesis mode ("Three studies used randomized designs, but only one tested the intervention on adolescents").

The matrix is also a backup: if you lose your notes on one paper, the matrix contains the essential facts and your critical comment.

Which Columns to Use for Different Review Types

The columns you choose depend on your research question and review scope.

For a Thematic Review (synthesis by theme or concept)

You can add, rename, and delete columns to match your needs. The default set is a hybrid suitable for most undergraduate and postgraduate reviews.

How to Fill It In as You Read, Not Afterwards

The temptation is to read all your sources first, then create the matrix and fill it in from memory. Do not do this. Fill in the matrix as you read each paper. Here is why:

  • You retain information better. Writing forces you to think deeply about what matters in a paper.
  • You catch missing information early. If a paper does not report sample size or limitations, you notice immediately, not at the synthesis stage.
  • You stay focused. The matrix gives you a concrete reading task: "I need to find the research question, methods, and key limitations."
  • You avoid the late-night crunch. By the time you finish all sources, the matrix is complete and your synthesis writing is faster.

Practical workflow:

  1. Open a paper on one screen, the matrix on the other.
  2. Read the abstract, introduction, and methods sections.
  3. Fill in the Author(s), Title, Source, Research Question, Method & Design, Sample, and Theoretical Framework columns immediately.
  4. Read the results and discussion.
  5. Fill in Key Findings and Limitations.
  6. Add a note about how it relates to your own study.
  7. Move to the next paper.

Turning a Completed Matrix Into Paragraphs — the Synthesis Step

Once you have filled your matrix with 10, 20, or 50 sources, you are ready to write your review. The matrix is not your literature review—it is the scaffold. Here is how to synthesize:

  • Identify patterns. Scan the matrix for recurring methods, findings, or populations. Example: "Seven of twelve studies used a quasi-experimental design; five were randomized controlled trials."
  • Group by theme or finding. Cluster sources that address the same question or disagree on an answer. Write a paragraph synthesizing that cluster, citing each source once.
  • Highlight gaps and disagreements. "Studies with adolescents consistently found X, but studies with adults report Y." This is synthesis, not summary.
  • Draw conclusions. What does the field know? What remains unclear? Your matrix helps you answer with evidence.

Do not write: "Author A (2020) found X. Author B (2021) found Y." That is a summary, not a synthesis. Your matrix makes it fast to see patterns; use that to write stronger, integrated paragraphs.

Exporting to Excel or Google Sheets

Once you have finished your matrix, you can export it in three formats:

  • CSV (Comma-Separated Values): Click "Download CSV" to save a .csv file. Open it in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet application. The file includes a UTF-8 BOM so that non-ASCII characters (accents, symbols) display correctly.
  • Markdown Table: Click "Copy as Markdown Table" to copy a markdown-formatted table to your clipboard. Paste it into a document, wiki, or GitHub readme.
  • PDF or Print: Click "Print / Save as PDF" to open your browser's print dialog. Choose "Save as PDF" and your matrix will be formatted as a landscape page, suitable for printing or archiving.

Your matrix is also saved automatically to your browser's local storage, so you can close the page and return later to edit it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add or delete columns?

Yes. Above the matrix, you will see a row labeled "Column Manager." Click the field to rename a column or enter a new column name, then click the delete icon to remove a column. Be careful when deleting a column—it will remove all data in that column, and you will be asked to confirm.

What if I want to reorder my rows or duplicate a source entry?

Each row has up/down arrow buttons (if there is more than one row) to reorder rows. To duplicate a row, click the duplicate button (the overlapping squares icon) and a copy of that row will appear below it. This is useful if you are comparing versions of a study or tracking different aspects of the same source.

Is my matrix saved automatically?

Yes. Your matrix is saved to your browser's local storage every time you make a change. A small status line at the top will say "Saved locally" if storage is available, or "Local saving unavailable in this browser context" if the browser does not support it. If storage is unavailable, your matrix exists only while the page is open—refreshing the page will lose your data. We recommend downloading a CSV backup if you plan to work on a large matrix.

Can I import a matrix I created elsewhere?

Not directly through this tool. However, if you have a CSV or spreadsheet, you can copy and paste the data into the matrix cells manually, or save your spreadsheet as CSV and open it in a text editor to understand its structure, then populate this matrix from it. If you need to preserve a lot of structured data, download your completed matrix as CSV and keep it as a backup.

What happens if I do not use the default columns?

You can rename or delete any column to match your review type. For example, if you are doing a narrative thematic review, you might not need "Sample (n, population)" or "Method & Design." Delete those columns and add custom ones like "Key Concepts" or "Relationship to Research Question." The tool is flexible—adapt it to your needs.

Can I print my matrix?

Yes. Click "Print / Save as PDF" and your browser's print dialog will open. The matrix will be formatted to fit a landscape page and all controls will be hidden. You can then save it as a PDF, print it to paper, or share it. Note that very wide matrices may need to be printed across multiple pages.
